Evelyn is the wife of a Bond Street jeweller; she knows what an orgasm is but hasn’t had one. Andrew is a graphic artist and womaniser, haunted by his gay past. Laurence, their host in Bexhill, is an ex-lover of Andrew’s; his teenage daughter Sarah is impatient to lose her virginity.
While Kennedy and Krushchev nudge the world towards a nuclear precipice, Pilgrim drives these middle-class misfits to a brink of their pwn. Their cosy Terrence Rattigan lives get a Joe Orton makeover in this dark comedy-of-manners with a gothic twist.

Whilst Britain absorbed the effects of the “Chatterley Trial” - but before the “Beatles’ first LP” - there was an exercise in MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) when the two most powerful nations on earth faced off against each other - and hair-trigger fingers trembled over buttons that would release their nuclear arsenals to possible world annihilation.Down in Bexhill-on-Sea it was business as usual and if things weren't all they ought to be, if you asked the Ladies for Moral Re-armament that is (which you wouldn’t), it was about as respectable as it gets. That is until a group of people who seem to fit in so well but don’t really fit in at all – and some who definitely don’t – find themselves together under one roof. Cuba’s missile crises almost pales into insignificance as Bexhill’s erupts!
Behind the imaginative cover of his book, David Gee has brought together some believable and well-drawn characters in an enjoyable and understanding story which, for me, moved along seamlessly. Chekhov it isn’t. A light-hearted read with something to think about might well sum it up. But neither is it reticent as Gee does not shy away from the more “graphic”. Recommended.
